B.D. Lee Elementary School students will benefit from a $300,000 federal grant awarded Monday for a community learning center. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate received a 21st Century grant totalling $299,700. The grant will be used by the club to establish afterschool programs at B.D. Lee Elementary and schools in Spartanburg District 6.

Nearly 40 parents have asked the Cherokee County School District to transfer their children to another county school this year. Parents had until June 26 to request the district move their children from Blacksburg Primary, Blacksburg Elementary, Limestone- Central, Luther Vaughan, and Mary Bramlett elementaries.

Jeff Brown scored 20 points as the 76ers remained unbeaten and atop the Division I standings with a 49-44 win over the Heat in the Cherokee County Youth Basketball League on Thursday. DeEdward Burris had 13 points in a losing effort.

A county employee died and two others were taken to local hospitals following a freakish accident on Overbrook Drive involving a Cherokee County garbage truck and a City of Gaffney dump truck. As the two vehicles passed each other headed in opposite directions Tuesday at about 7:50 a.m.
