    When the residents of Salt Pond Settlement decided they wanted to cut down two heritage birch trees on the premises, resident Amy Doran contacted local landscaper Derek van Lent to see if there was any way they could be moved to the Block Island School. Van Lent thought they could be.

    The Block Island Chemical Education Program board has renamed the organization to “the Block Island Prevention Task Force.” The group is a state funded, community-based drug and alcohol abuse prevention task force that works in coordination with the Recreation Department, Block Island Maritime Institute and the Block Island School.
