Rural schools to get renovations (The Post and Courier)

ST. GEORGE — Dorchester County's rural schools will get some "long overdue" renovations, including air conditioning in hot gymnasiums. District 4 officials plan to spend more than $2 million to upgrade five schools. "This is long overdue," School Board Chairman Kenneth Jenkins said after a unanimous vote last week.

COLUMBIA - The state has confirmed no additional West Nile virus during June, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The latest confirmed cases were both birds - an American crow found in Summerville in Dorchester County on April 4 and an American crow found in Rock Hill in York County on May 1.

Dorchester County officials are asking that question as they look closer at how fines are handled when offenders go to court. A county official says judges are dismissing 80 percent of the fines, sending a weak message to abusers and demoralizing enforcement officers.

With gas prices hovering just under $4 a gallon, thieves are thinking of new ways to fill up for free. Gas thefts have been reported recently from activity buses and even a patrol car parked in the yard of an officer who lives in Dorchester County. Now, a local businessman is seeing an increase in gas thefts from boats.
