Kershaw County implementing new animal control ordinance (The State)
(Thu, 05 Jun 2008 04:10:58 GMT)
Kershaw County residents could have more options when it comes to stray or nuisance animals, under a new animal control ordinance. County Council could give final approval at the end of the month to the new measure that includes, among other things, a leash law and specifics on pens for dangerous animals. The proposal received initial approval in late May. With five dog bite complaints in the ...
School board to consider new lines (The State)
(Mon, 09 Jun 2008 04:29:47 GMT)
KERSHAW COUNTY Now that Kershaw County’s school board has committed to building a new elementary school in East Camden, the panel will turn its attention to drawing new attendance lines for the school and two other elementary facilities. School officials say there is no rush to make a decision because construction likely won’t begin until spring 2009. A look at the issue: How does the board’s ...
Growth is key issue in council race (The State)
(Sun, 08 Jun 2008 04:15:57 GMT)
Elgin-area residents are concerned about growth but also worried about job security and how Kershaw County is spending its tax dollars, the candidates for County Council’s District 3 seat say. Political newcomer Charles R. Miles and incumbent John Wells meet in Tuesday’s Republican primary. Miles, 44, said he can better relate to the district’s residents because his family has deep roots in the ...
Kershaw County: Schools consider single-gender (The State)
(Mon, 02 Jun 2008 10:58:51 GMT)
Some Kershaw County elementary and middle school students could choose to attend single-gender classes by the 2009-10 school year. District officials are starting discussions now with teachers, parents and students to gauge interest in a single-gender program, which would be tested in the first year at Blaney Elementary and Camden Middle and, possibly, expanded after that. The school district ...
S.C. PRIMARIESLower voter turnout expected (The State)
(Mon, 09 Jun 2008 04:22:39 GMT)
All S.C. voters have a stake in Tuesday’s primaries, but few observers predict a large turnout. In Richland, Lexington and Kershaw counties, absentee ballots are down, an indicator of low turnout. S.C. voters have a chance Tuesday to weigh in on dozens of contested races, from a U.S. Senate seat to contests for seats on county council and school board. “Usually, in a primary like this where ...
FARM OFFERS WAY TO CUT DOWN PRISON TIME AND FOOD COSTS (The State)
(Mon, 09 Jun 2008 04:22:29 GMT)
Danny gently rubs the cow’s flank before cleaning her udder and attaching a milking machine. He has been kicked twice, so he knows to handle the animal with care — even though it’s secure in its milking parlor. “The cow’s moody,” he says. “Sometimes you gotta let ‘em know you’re back there. They’re scared of you.” Danny — prison rules don’t allow inmates to be identified by their full names — is ...
East Camden to get new elementary school (The State)
(Wed, 04 Jun 2008 04:14:11 GMT)
A new elementary school will be built in east Camden on U.S. 1, after a 6-3 vote Tuesday by the Kershaw County School Board. The board has not decided whether it will name the facility Jackson School, and it’s unclear when construction will begin. The school will hold 550 students, with room for expansion. Board members Joey Dorton, Sherri Brosius, Charles King, Mara Horton Jones, Kim DuRant and ...
Elgin to hold hearing before vote on budget (The State)
(Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:44:10 GMT)
KERSHAW COUNTY Elgin will hold a public hearing tonight and take a final vote on a 13 percent budget increase over last year. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 2469 Main St. For 2008-09, the city’s general fund budget is increasing to $667,100 from $580,600 in 2007-08. The town does not have property taxes, so residents will not be affected by the increase, town officials said.
School board might decide on new site (The State)
(Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:43:51 GMT)
The Kershaw County School Board will discuss and possibly approve Tuesday a new Jackson Elementary School site. The Jackson School site debate is ongoing after nearly two years of discussions about whether to remodel the current facility or build a new one, where to build, and what to call the school. Possibilities for alternative locations for the school include a site in east Camden on U.S. 1; ...
Blythewood Farmers market ready to bloom (The State)
(Fri, 06 Jun 2008 04:17:59 GMT)
Northeast Richland is getting its third farmers market, with the town of Blythewood launching one later this month. The market, which will be held the third Saturday each month, is another way to create an identity and bring neighbors together in this fast-growing town, said administrator John Perry. “We have a lot of rural-area individuals who are not wholesale farmers but who have gardens,” ...
