    An Irish company will meet with local travel businesses July 8 in an attempt to boost tourism in Cherokee County. The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has hired Tourism Development International (TDI) of Dublin, Ireland, to develop tourism plans for the Upstate and seven other regions in the state.

    The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said the parents of two boys who caused an estimated $1,500 in damage with a slingshot will attempt to work out a repayment agreement with the owner of a vacant home. According to a police report, two 14-year-old boys damaged the vacant home on Possum Trot Road in Blacksburg with a slingshot between June 25 and July 1.

    From one corner of Cherokee County to another, there's been an ongoing rush for gold-colored metal as thieves have been laying claim to air conditioning units, crawl spaces and even cell phone towers. A frustrating crime on many levels, the rising theft of copper has been a nationwide trend that only became worse as the scrap prices for copper have risen.

    Sauntering in about two hours too late, a small group of Cherokee County residents learned Friday morning it took an early bird to catch the hash. "Any hash left," one woman asked as she walked into the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Family Life Center, where the Cherokee Creek Volunteer Fire Department was holding its annual Fourth of July barbecue and hash sale.

    A night of racing at Cherokee Speedway took a frightening turn Thursday. Stacy Million, a 23-year-old Cherokee County resident, was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after she was struck by a car and pinned under a tow truck during the dirt track's annual Independent Shootout event.

    RIDGEWAY - James William Bell, 60, formerly of Gaffney, died July 5, 2008, at Providence Northeast Hospital in Columbia. A native of Cherokee County, he was a son of the late Walter J. and Fannie Erwin Bell. He was a charter member of Freedom Fellowship Church and was a millwright by trade.
