    An emergency management official in Altus says that more than half of the Jackson County town remained without power after a powerful late-spring storm system unleashed fierce winds on the area and much of Oklahoma the night before.

    Daylight on Friday morning in Altus revealed how much damage Thursday night's violent storm caused in Jackson County.  Strong winds pummeled the area, knocking out power for many, and numerous businesses were either heavily damaged or destroyed.  More than 50 homes sustained damage, and one is considered a total loss.

    A woman driving south on N. Crain Sunday morning lost control of her vehicle and hit a parked van. According to reports, the woman driving the car said a bug landed on her leg and she was trying to get it off when she lost control and hit the parked vehicle.

    At the end of the three-day filing period Wednesday, two races had developed for Jackson County offices.

  • Altus totals storm damage costs, asks for disaster declaration (KSWO Lawton-Wichita Falls) (Mon, 09 Jun 2008 05:12:12 GMT)
    Electric crews in Altus now have 95-percent of the city's power restored. The news comes three days after 87-mile-per-hour winds blew apart parts of town Thursday night. This weekend, officials say an American Red Cross shelter fed nearly one thousand people and about two dozen people stayed overnight. As for the dollar amount of damage across town, that number keeps climbing.

    According to reports, a stabbing happened in the 400 block of S. Hudson early Sunday morning. Capt. Mike Turner said that a fight call involving a knife came in at 2:22 a.m. Sunday morning, and a short time later, they received a call from the Jackson County Memorial Hospital personnel that a stabbing victim was being treated in the emergency room.
