    CLARION - By most accounts, 1937 was not a good year for Harold Gates, a Wright County farmer. He was diagnosed with cancer, his farm was foreclosed on and 100 of his chickens, whose eggs he relied on as a bartering tool for groceries every week, had been recently stolen - all in the midst of the Great Depression.

    CLARION - In 1937, a group of youths from Wright County decided it would be fun to steal watermelons from a farmer in the middle of the night. A harmless prank, to be sure, though one that would cost one of the young men his life. The subsequent murder trial and its aftermath will be re-enacted Tuesday evening at the Heartland Museum in Clarion. The trial will begin at 7 p.m.

    Two young ladies will vie for Wright County Fair Queen this year. The contest was held Thursday, June 26 at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion. They were judged on poise, personality and interviews. The winner will be crowned on Wed., July 9 at 8:30 p.m. at the Free Stage.

    Luther W. Proeger, 87, Belmond, died June 30, 2008 at the Belmond Medical Center following a battle with cancer. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at the Belmond United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

    The barn on the Harold Bock farm was blown down Saturday night. Hay, machinery and kittens were inside. Crops in the area southeast of Belmond were tipped sideways by the gusts.
