Maryland School Rankings
Maryland Public K-12 School Rankings
are based on data from the
Maryland School Assessment (MSA)
provided by
Maryland State Department of Education.
There are two sets of rankings:

Standard Rankings
are based on the following:
- Elementary Schools:
The percentages of 3rd, 4th, and 5th
graders who achieved "Advanced" level on the Reading
and Mathematics parts of the MSA test.
- Middle Schools:
The percentages of 7th and 8th
graders who achieved "Advanced" level on the Reading
and Mathematics parts of the MSA test.
- High Schools:
The percentages of students passing the
Biology, Government, and Algebra parts of the HSA (High School Assessments) Exam
You have the option of (i) Ranking all schools in the State
of Maryland (choose "All Counties" in the toolbar to the left),
(ii) Comparing individual counties (choose "County Vs. County"), and
(iii) Comparing all schools in a given county (choose, for example,
"Montgomery" County).

click on the "Rank" button on the toolbar to the left. The
most recent rankings are available for subscribers only.

Customized Rankings (Subscribers Only)
are based on the following:
- Elementary Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
"Advanced" and "Proficient" levels on the Reading and Mathematics
parts of the MSA test.
Can choose either 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, or all grades.
- Middle Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
"Advanced" and "Proficient" levels on the Reading and Mathematics
parts of the MSA test.
Results are for the 7th and/or 8th grades.
- High Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
Percent passing the Biology, Government, and Algebra parts of the HSA Exam.
With the Customized Ranking, you can choose any or all of the counties.

Notes:
- High school Government test has been eliminated in 2008
- High school Geometry test has been eliminated in 2006
- Results for elementary schools in Kent County are not accurate since
fifth graders in that county are sent to middle schools.
- Prior to 2003, Maryland ranking was based on the Maryland
School Performance Assessment Program (MSPAP). Comparisons
from year-to-year may not be appropriate and may result in error.
- In 2002, many counties in Maryland did not participated in the
MSPAP testing program for middle schools.
