Maryland School Rankings

Maryland Public K-12 School Rankings are based on data from the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) provided by Maryland State Department of Education. There are two sets of rankings:

  • Standard Rankings are based on the following:

      Kids
    • Elementary Schools: The percentages of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who achieved "Advanced" level on the Reading and Mathematics parts of the MSA test.
    • Middle Schools: The percentages of 7th and 8th graders who achieved "Advanced" level on the Reading and Mathematics parts of the MSA test.
    • High Schools: The percentages of students passing the Biology, Government, and Algebra parts of the HSA (High School Assessments) Exam

You have the option of (i) Ranking all schools in the State of Maryland (choose "All Counties" in the toolbar to the left), (ii) Comparing individual counties (choose "County Vs. County"), and (iii) Comparing all schools in a given county (choose, for example, "Montgomery" County). To view FREE public school rankings from a prior year, simply click on the "Rank" button on the toolbar to the left. The most recent rankings are available for subscribers only. Subscription fee is $8.33/month (1-year term). Sign up here.

  • Customized Rankings (Subscribers Only) are based on the following:

      Learning
    • Elementary Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: "Advanced" and "Proficient" levels on the Reading and Mathematics parts of the MSA test. Can choose either 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, or all grades.
    • Middle Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: "Advanced" and "Proficient" levels on the Reading and Mathematics parts of the MSA test. Results are for the 7th and/or 8th grades.
    • High Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: Percent passing the Biology, Government, and Algebra parts of the HSA Exam.

With the Customized Ranking, you can choose any or all of the counties. Subscription fee is $8.33/month (1-year term). Sign up here.

Notes:
  • High school Geometry test has been eliminated in 2006
  • Results for elementary schools in Kent County are not accurate since fifth graders in that county are sent to middle schools.
  • Prior to 2003, Maryland ranking was based on the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program (MSPAP). Comparisons from year-to-year may not be appropriate and may result in error.
  • In 2002, many counties in Maryland did not participated in the MSPAP testing program for middle schools.
