Massachusetts School Rankings

Massachusetts Public K-12 School Rankings are based on data from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Test provided by the Massachusetts Department of Education. There are two sets of rankings:

  • The Standard Rankings are based on the following:

      Kids
    • Elementary Schools: The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in English Language Arts and Math for fourth graders.
    • Middle Schools: The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in English Language Arts for seventh graders and Math for eighth graders.
    • High Schools: The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in English Language Arts and Math for tenth graders.

You have the option of (i) Ranking all schools in the State of Massachusetts (choose "All Counties" in the toolbar to the left), (ii) Comparing individual counties (choose "County Vs. County"), and (iii) Comparing all schools in a given county (choose, for example, "Suffolk" County). To view FREE public school rankings from a prior year, simply click on the "Rank" button on the toolbar to the left. The most recent rankings are available for subscribers only. Subscription fee is $8.33/month (1-year term). Sign up here.

  • The Customized Rankings (Subscribers Only) are based on the following:

      Learning
    • Elementary Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: Third Grade English Language Arts, Fourth Grade English Language Arts, Fourth Grade Mathematics, and Sixth Grade Mathematics. Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage, Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not Failing) Percentage.
    • Middle Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: Sixth Grade Mathematics, Seventh Grade English Language Arts, Eighth Grade Mathematics, and Eighth Grade History and Social Science. Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage, Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not Failing) Percentage.
    • High Schools: Can choose any or all of the followings: Tenth Grade English Language Arts and Tenth Grade Mathematics. Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage, Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not Failing) Percentage.

With the Customized Ranking, you can choose any or all of the counties. Subscription fee is $8.33/month (1-year term). Sign up here.

Notes:
  • Grade level distributions are not consistent throughout Massachusetts. For example, sixth graders are in elementary schools in some areas; but in other areas, they are in middle or junior high schools. This site classifies elementary schools as those with fourth graders, middle schools as those with eighth graders, and high schools as those with tenth graders. Some schools may be classified in more than one category.
