Massachusetts School Rankings
Massachusetts Public K-12 School Rankings are based
on data from the
Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Test provided by the
Massachusetts Department of Education.
There are two sets of rankings:

The Standard Rankings
are based on the following:
- Elementary Schools:
The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in
English Language Arts and Math for fourth graders.
- Middle Schools:
The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in
English Language Arts for seventh graders and
Math for eighth graders.
- High Schools:
The Percentage of Students at the Advanced Level in
English Language Arts and Math for tenth graders.
You have the option of (i) Ranking all schools in the State
of Massachusetts (choose "All Counties" in the toolbar to the left),
(ii) Comparing individual counties (choose "County Vs. County"), and
(iii) Comparing all schools in a given county (choose, for example,
"Suffolk" County).

click on the "Rank" button on the toolbar to the left. The
most recent rankings are available for subscribers only.

The Customized Rankings (Subscribers Only)
are based on the following:
- Elementary Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
Third Grade English Language Arts,
Fourth Grade English Language Arts,
Fourth Grade Mathematics,
and
Sixth Grade Mathematics.
Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage,
Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not
Failing) Percentage.
- Middle Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
Sixth Grade Mathematics,
Seventh Grade English Language Arts,
Eighth Grade Mathematics,
and
Eighth Grade History and Social Science.
Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage,
Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not
Failing) Percentage.
- High Schools:
Can choose any or all of the followings:
Tenth Grade English Language Arts
and
Tenth Grade Mathematics.
Can choose either Mean Scores, Advanced Proficiency Percentage,
Proficiency or Better Percentage, or Needs Improvement or Better (Not
Failing) Percentage.
With the Customized Ranking, you can choose any or all of the counties.

Notes:
- Grade level distributions are not consistent throughout
Massachusetts. For example, sixth graders are in elementary schools in
some areas; but in other areas, they are in middle or junior high schools.
This site classifies elementary schools as those with fourth graders,
middle schools as those with eighth graders, and high schools as those
with tenth graders. Some schools may be classified in more than
one category.
