Alabama is a beautiful state with many attributes. No, most of the people are not hillbillies and don't go barefoot (except on the beach). However, Alabama's public schools rank 48th in the USA. If you're moving to Alabama, check your public school very carefully, and don't just compare with other Alabama public schools. Remember, the whole state school system is 48th out of 50th. The "best" school may still be best among the worst. You may be persuaded that the best education for your children is in one of the private schools. Private schools out-perform even the "better" public schools by leaps and bounds on standardized achievement tests. A higher percentage of their graduates attend college, and the environment is usually more traditional, safer, and family friendly. When a public school in Alabama boasts of being one of the "best in Alabama," remember you are still talking about 48 out of 50, or third from the bottom. Everything after that is comparative: How bad are we? Well, there are a few which are worse than we are. That makes us "one of the best in Alabama." Is that what you're looking for? Think private if you can afford it.
