What's Up, Jun 11, 2007
Markham Middle School is plagued by a revolving overturn in administrators. Each group thinks they know how to turn the school around. They have no knowledge of the neighborhood or its dynamics.

School safety is a major problem. Students buy food or school supplies from the open windows just to have some other kid grab it from them. Sometimes they are robbed of their money and possessions.

The school has two lunch periods but nobody cleans up between them. First the sixth graders eat (and throw food). Then, right on top of the mess, the seventh and eight graders have their lunch.

Students disrupt classes regularly. The administration handles it by labeling the teacher as incompetent. There are no student consequences so the behavior continues.

When Mayor Villaregoisa toured the school, the principal put the problem students into the gym and auditorium. Only well behaved student in proper uniforms were seen. So the problem was well hidden.

Markham has excellent teachers. If they were at a school where disruptors were not tolerated, the good students would excel.

There is a solution, but the District has not placed the right person into authority. If it continues, the school may fall into the possession of Green Dot just like Locke High School. Perhaps that would not be so bad!!
