Arcadia High School, Nov 15, 2009
I have had one daughter graduate from Arcadia High, one graduating this year, and one starting in the fall of 2010. When we moved to Arcadia my oldest daughter was starting her junior year and the middle daughter was starting freshman year. The school is huge, about the size of a small college with nearly 4,000 students. My freshman was so overwhelmed on her first day, she literally walked off the campus and called us to take her home. Administration was somewhat sympathetic to her plight and assigned another student to shadow her for the first week. Those two girls are still friends today. The counselors need to be retrained to remember why they are employed and who they are there to serve. They are rude and condescending to the kids and only take steps to counsel them when the parents step in and flex some muscle. On the other hand, AHS has an amazing educational program with tons of choices for any student. The courses are diverse and challenging and some of the teachers are top notch. Others not so much. The school tests very high in CST and SAT. There is no student at this school that can't find his or her niche and feel a sense of belonging. My girls got involved in several of the 60 or so clubs that are offered and soon had a circle of friends and were involved in things that interest them. All in all, I would say that this school was a very positive experience for them, but the parents must be prepared to be involved with the school because due to the sheer size of the school it is easy for a kid to fall through the cracks and not get the help he needs if he falls behind.
